April 28th marks Workers’ Memorial Day, which was founded in 1989 in remembrance of workers who have died from on-the-job accidents or occupational illness. In 2010, 4,340 workers were killed in the United States by traumatic work related injuries. This does not include deaths caused by exposure to toxic substances while working. One such substance is asbestos, a carcinogenic mineral fiber that is known to cause lung cancer and mesothelioma, a rare cancer of the mesothelial membrane.
Construction workers and firefighters are particularly at risk of asbestos exposure, as the mineral was used in a variety of construction materials prior to its banning 1989. Whenever asbestos-containing materials are disturbed, be it by renovation, demolition or fire, microscopic fibers are released that can easily be inhaled by anyone in the vicinity. Prolonged asbestos exposure is the leading cause of malignant mesothelioma, and aggressive and incurable cancer that is difficult to detect.
It is difficult to determine how many cases of asbestos-related deaths are due to exposure while on the job because asbestos cancer generally takes decades to develop, making the period and location of exposure difficult to determine.
April 28, 2011, also marks the 40th anniversary of the Occupational Health & Safety Administration (OSHA). Since the founding of this Washington, D.C.-based agency, the construction worker fatality rate has dropped by 86% and 76% for manufacturing workers. OSHA inspections, as well as its efforts to make workers and their supervisors more safety conscious have been the key to this marked occupational safety.
